Tis the season for scares!

Ok gals and ghouls, October is just around the corner and I usually go on a “scary” movie streak for my movie watching and I want to know your favorite non popular horror movie. Leave out the universal top 10 list, what else do you have. One of my is Prince of Darkness, a John Carpenter movie that wasn’t that popular and is lesser known than Halloween or The Thing. A priest passes and leaves a church with a secret in its basement. There is a tube filled with a mysterious liquid and another priest contacts a Physicist at a local university and he recruits a group of scientists to head to the old church and attempt to discover what this mysterious entity actual is. I have to say it has to be one of my most favorite premise for a horror movie. Scientists, armed with the scientific method, logic, etc up against something that they can’t quantify. It doesn’t necessarily fulfill the desire as Carpenter seemed rushed and didnt necessarily understand scientists. But I do love that movie. So what do you have? What scared you or intrigues you as a concept of a horror movie.

Great choice! Really good movie. I quite enjoy Horror, so I would have plenty. But here are four of them:

Martyrs (french original - not the Remake); nothing supernatural, no monsters or ghosts...just humans. Not for the faint-hearted. The last 30min are pretty tough

Frailty - totally underrated and with an excellent Bill Paxton. Less graphic, but lots of twists and turns

Eden Lake - again: Human Horror...with a great Michael Fassbender. Who's getting in trouble with some kids, what could go wrong, right?

Bonus:

The Descent - well known, but needs to be watched with the original UK ending.

My favorite "Under the Radar" horror movie is The Skeleton Key. Mysterious, paranoiac, and a great payoff.

I think I’ve heard of it. Kate Hudson is in it, correct?

Yes, she is.

I highly recommend it.

Eden Lake also has Kelly Reilly of Yellowstone fame. Both are outstanding in this under the radar thriller.

Solid choices. I agree Martyrs is great.

I spit on your Grave! The original from 1978 I think it is. There is a remake but not as good.

Ah yes horror movies! I remember really enjoying some good horror movies. But alas my wife can't handle a good old horror flick. She can't even handle American horror story, which i find to be entertaining. Oh the forgotten days of some good old fashioned jump scares and overall creepy, scary movies to keep you up at night.

Tucker and Dale vs Evil is a comedic look at a standard out in the woods type of horror movie, but it is absolutely hilarious. You might want to have her try that. Also the Ready or Not franchise, or the Happy Death Day franchise. Horror in the sense that they deal with that type of genre but not to an extent that it bothers those that dislike horror and the funny is equally emphasized.

I always found the concept (if not the execution) of the Ju-On / The Grudge movies to be really disturbing. Just the idea of this presence that is so implacably angry at everything, and all you have to do is set foot in the wrong house for it to notice you. And once that happens nothing you can do will save you. No magic, no faith, no secret ritual. You did nothing wrong but this thing is going to stalk you, toy with you and eventually it will kill you. That nihilstic element just makes it so much worse.

That is a pretty good descriptor of those types of movies. Similar in vein are both of The Crazies movies. No logic, no wrong doing, just anger and a desire to end you.

Thank you for mentioning this movie! I've seen clips of it on YouTube, and really want to watch it, but I forgot the title. Now I have a reference point to return to should my feeble brain once again fail to retain information that I desperately want to keep.

I gotta see if this is available On Demand, because I'm sure I would enjoy it.

Thanks again, mate.

Happy to help. Check out the rest. All of them are different shades of funny mixed in with scares.

Tucker & Dale is a hilarious movie. The English movie "Severance" (2006) is another great, yet almost unknown Horror Comedy worth checking out:

If you want a dose of horror plus humor, I can recommend a little Irish film, 'Grabbers'. Check Out the trailer here

A few additions of some movies I've enjoyed. Next week I'll make a post about the most controversial Horror movies for our Horror and movie fans out there.

Cube (1997) - a clever canadian low-budget sci-fi-Horror. Had some sequels, not great though. The first is fantastic though!

Zombi 2 (1979) - during the peak of Zombie movies this was made by the great Lucio Fulci. Also known as "Zombie" or "Zombie Flesh Eaters". On par for me with the great "Dead Trilogy" by George A. Romero (which I absolutely love). And it includes an underwater Zombie - Shark fight!

Deep Rising (1997) - a guilty pleasure of mine. A fine Monster-Horror with an amazing cast! Directed by Stephen Sommers.

Ticks (1993) - a campy B-movie with a surprising cast. Fantastic cheap-made monster Horror. I just love this one.

The Changeling (1980) - well know amongst Horror fans. But I want to give it a shout-out anyway. It's a really superb movie, even if you're not into Horror.

The Changeling has been recommended to me by another friend, and I definitely am intrigued. I've had trouble finding it, though. I'll keep looking, as I really like well-done horror films.

Ban-One "Deep Rising" is such glorious B-movie cheese.

Definitely worth trying to find it. George C. Scott is great as usual in it.

It's public domain. As many great movies, books etc. it's available on archive.org (download or via Tubi), maybe it works for you:
