To be honest, it feels very uncomfortable to ask for help like this. I am usually the one who gives others help. But sometimes life humbles us, and we have reached a point where we simply cannot do it alone.
I am 72 years old, soon to be 73, and I am recovering from two unsuccessful spinal surgeries that have left me unable to continue working. As a result, our only reliable income is my Social Security benefits, not much.
My wife has suffered multiple strokes, along with numerous other serious health conditions. Over the past two years, she has been hospitalized 15 times and has spent many additional weeks in rehabilitation facilities. She is no longer able to walk independently or even stand at this point.
Because of my own physical limitations due to age and my surgeries, I can no longer provide the level of care she needs safely at home. Between medical bills for both of us, caregiving costs, and other necessities, we are facing the very real possibility of losing our home where we've lived for 27 years.
While we are grateful for Medicare, it does not cover nearly as much as people assume. The mountain of bills has become more than we can manage, into the many thousands and growing.
My wife does not know I am asking for help on her behalf. Setting aside my pride is one of the hardest things I've ever had to do, but she means everything to me, and I will do whatever I can to make sure she receives the care she deserves.
If you are able to help in any way, no matter the amount, we would be deeply grateful. And if you are unable to contribute, we understand and thank you for taking the time to read our story, and for keeping us in your thoughts.
